Attracting Your Perfect Client (Part 1): Know Who You're Talking To
Apr 11, 2022Every business owner I know who has ever reached out to me for advice about marketing their business wants to know one thing:
How do you attract the PERFECT clients?
Not just any client…but the person that is a great fit and we actually enjoy working together. Those types of clients….
I can honestly say this has been a journey for me. When I first started out in business, I took whatever came in the door…because that’s what you do to pay the bills.
I found that some of the clients I was taking on either….
a) didn’t care as much about their business as I did (they would’ve get me what I needed - text, graphics, etc.) or
b) wouldn’t do what I told them they needed to do in order to see results.
So, I went back to the drawing board and decided to get specific and nail down who my perfect client really was.
The interesting thing about defining who your perfect client is - once you’ve defined that person…your messaging becomes so much easier.
Why?
✅ You know what they need in order to be successful.
✅ You know what they’re really struggling with and how you can help them.
✅ Better yet…you know how to “speak their language” so not only do you connect with them in a meaningful way, but they then begin to trust you to be their guide.
If you’re struggling trying to figure out who your perfect client is, do these two things:
1️⃣ Take a look at your social media posts. Who is commenting? Who is engaging with you?
2️⃣ Take a look at your own habits when it comes to consuming information. What accounts on Instagram or LinkedIn do you enjoy reading? Then, look to see who else follows those accounts.
Identify an actual person who is your perfect client. If you feel comfortable asking a few questions, talk to them about the two questions below. If you don’t feel comfortable asking that person, I want you to put yourself in their shoes and consider these questions and write down everything that comes to mind.
1️⃣ Demographic information: age, sex, marital status, shopping habits, car they drive, extracurricular activities, own/rent a home, podcasts, books, kids, pets, luxury/generic.
2️⃣ Psychographic information: what keeps them up at night, what do they worry about, what are their fears, what are they telling themselves when no one is around.
Having a strong sense of who your perfect client is will help you message and market your business to them in a way that emotionally connects them to you…
…and people who are emotionally connected and vested typically will buy from you on repeat.
